Sonu Niigaam Sings For 'Paanch Din'
Young music director Ricky Kej, who has scored music for well-known Kannada films like Accident and Venkata In Sankata has signed his first Bollywood project called Woh Paanch Din.
The director was looking for a new composer and stumbled upon my international work,” Ricky tells Metrolife. “They wanted one person to compose both the background score as well as the songs,” he adds.
Directed by Sandeep, the movie is a suspense thriller about four call centre employees, who travel from Delhi to Nainital. How different will the music be from his Kannada projects? “It will have a more international feel to it,” answers he. “Plus I will be experimenting a lot more.”
Besides the background score, the movie will have three songs sung by popular Bollywood singers like Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan and Kunal Ganjawala. “Bangalored based singer Avinash Chebbi will be singing a song as well,” Ricky informs. “One song is about friendship, while the other song is an item number. The third song is a Sufi song.” But Ricky confirms that he will not be shifting his base to Mumbai. “When I pitched in for the project, one of my conditions was to work from Bangalore,” he says.
Ricky is extremely excited about his second Bollywood project as well. “The production house has signed me for another film called Dil Mein Kuch Hone Laga, which will be a big budget film.” Then there is Ramesh Aravind’s Crazy Kutumba on the Kannada front, where he has given music to four old Kannada poems. “I am quite eager for its release,” he exclaims.

Classical music is the ultimate: Ustad Rashid Khan
Mumbai: Gunidas Sammelan is among the few such events in the city which have preserved and promoted the true and rare art of Hindustani classical music. As the 33rd sammelan takes place in the city, After Hrs caught up with Ustad Rashid Khan, who performs at the festival and belongs to the Rampur-Sahaswan Gharana. He was awarded the Padma Shri, as well as the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2006. Even Pandit Bhimsen Joshi is believed to have said once that Rashid Khan holds the true potential and promise for the future of Indian vocal music.
Khan likes to concentrate purely on the classical style of music and is not really tempted to run the rat race of the Hindi film industry.
"Classical music is the ultimate. You may feel that the younger generation doesn't listen to classical music, but actually there are hundreds of amazing classical songs present today, existing either with fusion music or pure, which are really loved by the younger generation," he says.
Khan's Aao ge jab song in the film Jab We Met is a classic example. This classical song has a slow melodious and romantic tone and is considered among the best songs from the movie. "Classical music will continue to exist forever," he says. However, Khan is not happy with the general state of music that is being produced in the industry. "I feel that there is less of 'gaana' and more of 'bajaana' in most of the music you hear today. It doesn't mean that I am criticising anybody but there are certain really random songs you hear in movies today which have no head or tail," he remarks.
But he holds musicians and singers such as AR Rahman, Shankar Mahadevan, Sonu Nigam, Jagjit Singh and Hariharan in high regard. He says, "All of these musicians have learnt classical music since inception. They really know the value of good music."
AKG Powers Sonic At Indian Rock Festival
As 50,000 students from across Southeast Asia flooded into the AIIMS campus for the PULSE festival in September, Asian rock bands Sonu Nigaam, Euphoria and Motherjane were preparing to rock the crowd with AKG's DMS 700 series digital microphone.
Over the next seven days, the three bands performed with other Asian superstars using an array of Harman products that included Soundcraft mixers, Crown amplifiers and AKG microphones, provided by Audio Design.
The festival, which was co-sponsored by Harman International's professional division's India distributor Hi-Tech Audio Systems, went from September 16 - September 22 and featured a variety of events that included a fashion show, various dance and singing competitions, a fine arts competition, and multiple concerts.
Harman Professional played a central role at each event; whether they were mixing the sound with the Soundcraft MH4 or delivering uninterrupted vocal tones with the AKG's DMS 700 series digital microphone. AKG was used every day and drew praise from many of the bands who used them, including Sonu Niigaam & Palash Sen.
Navneet Wadhwa, Director of Audio Design, said: "We selected AKG for its warmth, versatility and reliability. As one of the largest professional rental companies in India, we are very familiar with the sonic integrity and pristine audio quality that AKG is known for, and we knew that it would exceed expectations for both the crowds and the performers. We selected the DMS 700 Digital Wireless Microphone Series with the D5 head. The D5 head has a fantastic gain structure, which in turn gives us a lot of headroom at the mix console and its output is indeed the most natural sounding."

I Don't Want to Sing 'Crap' in Bollywood
After a host of foreign concerts and producing his independent music, versatile singer, Sonu Nigam is back on the Bollywood front, but this time he means business and that is not to sing "crap".
The 36-year-old singer whose 'Chiggy Wiggy' with Australian pop star Kylie Minogue and 'Don't Say Alvida' from Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor starrer Main Aur Mrs Khanna have turned out to be the new chartbusters, said that he consciously cut his Bollywood assignments because he did not want to be associated with low quality music.
"I did not want to work according to anybody's whims and fancies. After 17 years of my career, I think I can take this much liberty to associate myself just with quality music and say no to trash. I have worked hard to be where I am today so I better choose accordingly to protect my reputation," Sonu told PTI.
The singer, who is currently in the midst of a tour in Los Angeles, was in the city as the brand ambassador of Big 92.7 FM to change the music position of the radio station and launch the new "Chillax hits".
"My sensibilities of music matched with the station's. Item numbers come and go but now I want to sing some eternal songs which have a soothing effect on people....Give them moments of relaxation in this fast paced life. The station plans to do so too," Sonu said.
Last year, Sonu was almost absent from the film circuit and produced his independent music. He released an album 'Classically Mild', and then came out with a single Punjabi track called "Punjabi Please". He also released 'Rafi Resurrected', a 2-disc collection of legendary singer Mohammad Rafi songs with music by the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
But when asked about his ardent fans who hear so less of him nowadays in Bollywood, the singer said, "This conscious decision is particularly for my fans. I don't want to disappoint them by singing anything and everything," the singer said.

Bollywood playback singer Sonu Nigam loves singing Kannada songs compared to Hindi ones. He will be performing live once again for the Bangalore crowd after a gap of two years on October 11 at Palace Grounds.
Here's what Sonu had to say when MiD DAY asked him about his life, his love for Kannada music and his acting career.
What's special about your attachment to Kannada films? Any new albums or movies in the pipeline?
I enjoy singing in Kannada a lot more than in Hindi. They make such good music, it satisfies my soul. I definitely want to cut more private albums in music be it in Hindi, English or Kannada, merely because I believe private albums give you an outlet to express your kind of music.
There are criticisms from some quarters about 'outsiders' singing Kannada songs. They say that knowing the language is also important for singing. What is your stand?
How does knowing the language help if you don't know how to express yourself with it? I drown myself in a song when I sing it. I kill myself. I don't know if I am singing Hindi, Tamil, English, Kannada or Marathi. I enact and express with every line I sing. If I don't know the language, there are people around me to explain what the words mean. I know nothing else at that time. I only know I am doing music. And that God is showing through my voice.

Sonu Niigaam Sings Zoobi Doobi For 3 Idiots
Now that Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor are starring together in Raju Hirani’s 3 Idiots, after two misses (Mani Ratnam’s Lajjo and Vishal Bhardwaj’s Mr Singh & Mrs Mehta) there is a considerable amount of curiosity about this never-seen-before jodi.

We dropped in on the sets at Film City on Thursday to watch the two sizzle in the only romantic song, Zoobi doobi, in the film.
Entering the sets wasn’t an easy task because of the tight security. This despite the fact that we had taken the requisite permission on Wednesday to visit the sets. Thankfully, Aamir Khan spotted us after which going on the sets was a cakewalk.
Sung by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghoshal, the rain song has been composed by Shantanu Moitra. Aamir Khan, dressed in a burnt orange shirt and white trousers, was completely wet and gladly showed off his super flat abs. Kareena too wore a similar coloured sari and looked effortlessly stunning. The two actors dancing in the (artificial) rain reminded one of the Raj Kapoor-Nargis Awara song, Pyaar hua ikraar hua.
Choreographer Bosco was busy instructing all the dancers in the background. Aamir and Kareena were explained a shot, which was being filmed from a high angle. Raju Hirani sat by the monitor, closely watching the visuals. As soon as the shot was okayed, Aamir and Kareena rushed to check the scene in the monitor after which Aamir got busy with his Rubik cube. He told us that when he was in college, he could solve it in 27 seconds flat, but now he takes a minute to get it right. Surprisingly, he claimed that he could solve the Rubik cube without even seeing it, which he did, in exactly one minute. Aamir also said that he has quit smoking for over six months as he wanted to look fresh and young in the film.

Blue Music Review
Chiggy Wiggy | Kylie Minogue, Sonu Nigam, Suzanne
The song created especially for a promotional music video purpose, has Kylie who will appear in the music video with Akshay crooning her Chiggy Wiggy way that somewhat reminds you of kylDeep within the Bamboo grove. But as this is Rahman’s track, you can always expect something new in it.
Listen to halfway of the song and enter Sonu Nigam with an out-of-the-blue bhangra rhythm, now this is fusion of a high-order. Inovative-ness hardly comes in a better package. I am hooked to the 45 second segment from 2:15 to 3:00.
The western sections suit Kylie fine, and the bhangra section suits Akshay’s image fine. You can already imagine how the music video is gonna be now. A good track which will take some time to be liked.
Rehnuma | Shreya Ghosal, Sonu Nigam
Melody and the trademark Rahman feel is back with Rehnuma, this one featuring Shreya Ghoshal, who gets to eat more three-fourths of the cake; which means that she gets to sing in most part of the song. And rest assured, when she sings, your hair starts to stand, and once she starts crooning ‘Qaatil Adaa’ in her seductive avatar. The flashy orchestration adds more attitude, style to the substance that is truly western. Shreya Ghosal and Sonu Nigam sing the lines incredibly without ever sounding like an Indian voice soaked and trained in Indian classical music, they have poured sweat, heart and soul into this song.
The song relies more or less on the heavy orchestration that Rahman constantly uses for such songs – a recipe that guarantees complete success for the song. The crescendos with multi overlapping layers of Rehnuma chants, guitar motif and the string section are perfectly placed and are just out of the world, though you wish sound mixing could have been much better – rarest of complaints on a Rahman’s song.

Big FM earmarks Rs 10 mn for new campaign with Sonu Niigaam
Big FM, which has roped in popular singer Sonu Nigaam as brand ambassador for its fresh music positioning, plans to spend Rs 10 million on the first phase of a multi media campaign that includes radio, outdoor, online, mobile and print which will soon be launched.
The campaign, that will feature Niigaam, will kick off in 10 days. A TVC, part of the campaign, will be rolled in the second phase.
The association of the station with Niigaam comes just as the station launches its new music positioning - Chillax Hits - in Mumbai and Delhi, which promises listeners a distinct music format which will de-stress and help them relax, whenever they tune into the station. Big FM too is going the maximum songs way - it plans to play seven songs in back to back format, with an intention of playing 12 to 13 songs per hour.

The sixth edition of the "Annual Central European Bollywood Awards" (ACEBA), the pioneering and most important award voting in the German speaking Bollywood community, resulted in some expected and unexpected winners (see results in German here).
Clear overall-winner of the 6th ACEBA was the movie "Jodhaa Akbar" . The movie has swept seven awards and one of them goes to Sonu Niigaam as Best Playback Singer for the movie-song "Inn Lamhon Ke". CONGRATULATIONS !

Lifeline to launch its India edition
Lifeline, the only magazine dedicated to the voice of charity in United States, will be launching its India edition sometime towards the end of this year.
Robin Raina Foundation (RRF) that is doing pioneering work in institutionalising charity, making it a household topic in the South Asian community of United States, is the promoter of this coffee table publication. The glamorous style and glossy colour presentation of the magazine, and its advertising promoting the cause of supporting the under-privileged child, has contributed to the growing popularity of the magazine in the United States.
“What really prompted us to replicate this popular magazine in India is the fact that RRF runs the largest charity initiative in the Indian sub-continent worth $ 15 million in the form of 6000 concrete homes for the slum dwellers of Delhi. Not just that eminent Indian celebrities including actors Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Sushmita Sen, Celina Jaitly, Arjun Rampal, singers Asha Bhosle, Sonu Nigam, Shaan, Talat Aziz, Anup Jalota and legendary cricketer Kapil Dev are supporting the cause of the foundation through advertisements and by directly sponsoring RRF children,” Robin Raina, Chairman, RRF & Publisher, Lifeline told exchange4media.
According to Raina, the Indian edition of Lifeline will be distributed only by way of subscriptions and supported by advertisements like it is done in the United States. The content will be tailored to make charity ‘fashionable and cool’ and will include especially by-lined articles and photographs by celebrities promoting the cause of charity. The RRF is likely to adopt the US model where Lifeline is produced by honorary media persons committed to the cause of charity.

Jaipur, March 29: Recession blues have hit celebrations of Rajasthan Day, the founding day of the desert state, which will now be curtailed down to a one-day affair here in the Pink City tomorrow. In an attempt to curtail unnecessary expenses, the state Congress government has decided to encapsulate the usual week-long festivities initiated during the term of former chief minister Ms Vasundara Raje into a single-day event avoiding “unnecessary dazzle and extravaganza”.
“We have decided to celebrate the day with great fervour and spirit and that’s what counts in the end. Rajasthan Day should be celebrated on a single day,” said Ms Bina Kak, state tourism minister.
The state government has also decided to give prominence to local performers and artists from Rajasthan in the celebration. Jaipur, March 29: Recession blues have hit celebrations of Rajasthan Day, the founding day of the desert state, which will now be curtailed down to a one-day affair here in the Pink City tomorrow. In an attempt to curtail unnecessary expenses, the state Congress government has decided to encapsulate the usual week-long festivities initiated during the term of former chief minister Ms Vasundara Raje into a single-day event avoiding “unnecessary dazzle and extravaganza”.
“We have decided to celebrate the day with great fervour and spirit and that’s what counts in the end. Rajasthan Day should be celebrated on a single day,” said Ms Bina Kak, state tourism minister.
The state government has also decided to give prominence to local performers and artists from Rajasthan in the celebration. A Kannada Album by Sonu Nigam
So, Namma Kannadada Huduga Sonu Nigam, is all set to present an album to the Kannada music lovers. The guy has been heard in almost every single film music album heard recently, and looking at the response from the listeners, the fun has just begun. To carry forward his legacy, Sonu is coming out with a Kannada album called Neene Baare Neene.
Sonu’s favorites in Kannada, music director Mano Murthy and lyricist Jayant Kaikini will be working for this album too. The album is also being shot in Karnataka and model turned actress Madhuri Bhattacharya will also be seen in the film.

Singer Sonu Niigaam found a novel way to vent his anger on all the radio stations in the city that didn't play songs from his new album, Classically Mild. Sonu sent a 'letter of gratitude' to all the radio stations just to remind them that his album's sales have been soaring precisely because listeners were forced to buy his album to know what it was all about rather than just listen to it over radio. If that isn't an original, what is? What say, Sonu?

This is a heartfelt big thanks to your station for not playing Classically Mild, my new album on your station. Swear to God I felt bad initially until I saw the tides turning! Since my album is the only music which, in spite of being mainstream and highly appreciated, creates an impression of belonging to a Genre specific, which, perhaps, is not designated in your play list, thus not being heard at all on your station, and others too, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise since our sales have been consistently soaring higher and higher since people now have to buy it in order to listen to it! It's rare to see two diverse artistes come together and do a ghazal rendition. Talat Aziz's latest album Caravan-E-Ghazal, apart from bringing newness to the traditional ghazal format, also brings Sonu Nigam and himself together for the first time.
Talat Aziz and Sonu Nigam talk to DNA about singing a ghazal together and the independent music scene in India The two, in fact, had been planning an album together for a long time but Sonu's tight schedules and his performances abroad left him with little time to pursue it. Finally they decided to sing a song together in Aziz's album.
"When I came down to Mumbai
, Talat had already recorded his entire album. So we went to my studio and I over-dubbed on his voice. We have sung half-and-half, each in one line but the transition is smooth," says Nigam.
"He can sing anything from rock and bhangra to ghazals. He belongs to the international platform. He has outgrown India,"boasts Aziz of his friend Nigam's talent.
Aziz's album is one of a kind. It has nine classic poets -- from Mirza Ghalib to Janesar Akhtar, but the treatment is contemporary with pianos and nylon guitar.
"The compositions are traditional and you can't tamper the inherent rhythm of the ghazal. I have done the traditional harmonium and tabla compositions earlier but this time, I wanted to do something different. I wanted people who are not into ghazals to enjoy it too."
Aziz is an established musician, but is quick to admit that the present scene is such that independent artists find it difficult to break in to. Nigam agrees adding, "People need sleaze, and controversies to promote independent talent."

Sonuji is Raju Singh's Fav singer,
Tell us a the story behind making of the track - 'Soniyo'.
When Mohit and I worked out the entire song, we played it to Mukesh Bhattji and Mahesh Bhatt saab. They were all very kicked about it. Then we wanted to polish the song even more. I had sung the scratch version of 'Soniyo' and all of them wanted to keep my voice as the playback. By that time we had heard the song so many times that we were convinced the song was over. But realistically we had to rope in a singer. We went for Sonu Nigam. He said that it will be a super hit song. He also stated in one of his interviews that 'Soniyo' comes in the top ten songs he has ever sung.

The participants of Indian Idol are overwhelmed as Sonu Niigaam gives them priceless tips on singing...
Sonu Niigaam has re-entered Indian Idol, and this time as a mentor, and the contestants are reaping dividends with his tips on their singing skills. Their day was made when Sonu dropped in to meet the contestants.
“He gave each one of them tips and revealed tricks of the trade like no other singer would give. All of them were spurred by this gesture of his and listened to him very carefully,” says our source.
Mohit was so overwhelmed that he burst into tears. “Sonu's down to earth manners simply floored the young ones. He told Torsha to wear a smile on her face while singing. She was so glad to get tips from Sonu, and with his permission she called her parents and made them talk to the singer,” quips the source.
“Sourabhee who is not a trained singer had many questions for Sonu on her range, throw of voice etc. Sonu just told her to stop being nervous and keep singing, and everything will become fine,” adds the source.
Prasenjit was also overwhelmed by Sonu. “Prasenjit is one happy guy as Sonu stood talking with his arms around him, so much so that Prasenjit refuses to part with the jacket he was wearing, because it had Sonu's magical and motivational touch!,” concludes the source.
Only time will say how much these contestants have got motivated by the magical presence of Sonu!!

Saregama India Ltd, India’s foremost music company launched its new album “Caravan-E-Ghazal” at St. Andrews Auditorium, Mumbai.
The event was attended by an august gathering of eminent artistes, journalists and dignitaries.
Speaking at the launch of his album Talat Aziz said “This album is a culmination of a lot of love and hard work. I have tried to keep the compositions traditional keeping the great poets of Urdu and their poetry in mind, yet embellished the music with contemporary treatment. I was greatly helped in this by Jeetu Shankar who has arranged the music. And the highlight is the ghazal Sonu Niigaam has sung with me adding a new dimension to this album. I pray that everyone who listens to it likes it and hope that apart from the traditional lovers of the ghazal we manage to rope in new listeners to this CARAVAN .”
Sonu Niigaam, who has partnered with Talat Aziz for one of the tracks in the album shared his experience while recording the album and said, “I always wanted to sing ghazals, and ever since I got to know Talatji, it’s been my privilage to work with him.”
Atul Churamani, Vice President – Saregama India Limited said “It’s an honour for us to be associated with this project. There is a dire need for music today to have good poetry and “Caravan-E-Ghazal” is the epitome of that. It is the work of nine of the greatest poets set to some memorable music by Talat. The track with Sonu Niigaam ‘Qurbaton Mein Bhi…’ is the icing on the cake.”
Caravan-E-Ghazal is an anthology of Ghazals, which weaves together a selection from master poets of the Urdu language.
